In memoriam

Nikolai Romanenko (1943-2018)

Nematologist Nikolai D. Romanenko passed away in Moscow, Russia, on January 23, 2018. He was a principal researcher in the Laboratory of Plant Parasitology at the Centre of Parasitology of A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution, RAS.

Nikolai Romanenko graduated from the Plant Protection Department of the Moscow Timiryazev Agricultural Academy in 1965. From 1965 to 1989, he worked at the Zonal Research Institute of Temperate Horticulture. From 1965 to 1972, he worked as a junior researcher at the Laboratory of Pytohelminthology. In 1973, he defended his Ph.D. thesis "Distribution and dynamics of the number of parasitic nematodes of the families Longidoridae and Criconematidae on fruit and berry crops in the NonBlack Earth Zone of Russia". In 1973-1974, he served as a senior research fellow at the Laboratory of Virology and Phytohelminthology, and from 1974 to 1977, he headed the Plant Protection group of the Department of Nurseries of Fruit and Berry Crops. Since 1977, he was a senior research fellow of the Nematology group. From 1986 to 1989, he worked as a senior research fellow and deputy head of the Laboratory of Phytohelminthology, Toxicology and Phytosanitary.

In 1989, Nikolai Romanenko was appointed as Head of the sector of phyto- and entomohelminthology of the Helminthological laboratory of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

In 1993, he published the book "Phytohelminths of the family Longidoridae as virus-vectors". In 1994, he defended his D.Sc. thesis "Phytohelminths of the family Longidoridae as virus-vectors, their relationships with NEPO-viruses and the development of measures for their control on fruit and berry crops".

His research focused on the taxonomy, ecology and distribution of nematodes of the family Longidoridae. He made a great contribution to the management of nematode pests of plants through chemical and cultural control practices, as well as thermal disinfection of soil and plants. Also, he made important contributions in the areas of nematode behaviour, nematode-fungal interrelations, and biological control.

His career was devoted to agricultural research, specifically the study of plant-parasitic nematodes, and he forged strong links between research and the practical aspects of his field. He published more than 300 research papers.

Dr Romanenko was passionate about not only his scientific pursuits, but also about mentoring younger people. Throughout his lengthy career he went out of his way to help smooth the way for other budding professionals, including serving as a major professor for many graduate students, working long hours to prepare them to defend their dissertations.

Blessed memory of Nikolai Romanenko, a tireless researcher, will forever be in hearts of all his pupils, colleagues and everybody who knew him, lived and worked with him.

Colleagues S. Tabolin, M. Pridannikov, K. Perevertin, S. Zinovieva, V. Migunova, A. Shesteperov and K. Metlitskaya.
